However, many of these events are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uspto.gov\/ip\/events\/index.jsp\">regional or topical meetings <\/a>that include officials from many other countries. Programs for some events are not transparent, and may feature industry lobbyists and consultants as experts, without presenting a range of views or balance in terms of the information presented.  <\/p>\n<p>For the programs that are provided from the USPTO, the lack of balance is evident.  For example, for the WIPO-USPTO Workshop on Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights held in Washington, DC on Washington D.C., May 2 to 6, 2011, there were four private sector speakers.  They were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Roderick R. McKelvie, a partner at Covington &#038; Burling LLP <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cov.com\/rmckelvie\/\">http:\/\/www.cov.com\/rmckelvie\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>R. Jason Fowler, an Associate at Covington &#038; Burling LLP, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cov.com\/jfowler\/\">http:\/\/www.cov.com\/jfowler\/<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Michael Schlesinger, of the International Intellectual Property Alliance, and of Counsel, Greenberg Traurig, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/timtrainer\">http:\/\/www.gtlaw.com\/People\/MichaelSchlesinger<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Timothy P. Trainer, President of the Global Intellectual Property Strategy Center, P.C, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/timtrainer\">http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/timtrainer<\/a>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At a June 8-10, 2011 USPTO &#8220;Workshop for Legislators, Judges, and Government Representatives, on Intellectual Property Law and Strategic Management for Sustainable Economic Development,&#8221; the only identified private sector speakers were IP hardliners and industry consultants Michael Ryan and Michael Schlesinger.<\/p>\n<p>Ryan is an IPR hardliner who is the Director of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.gwu.edu\/Academics\/research_centers\/ciec\/Pages\/Partners.aspx\">corporate funded<\/a> GWU Creative &#038; Innovative Economy Center, and is an industry consultant who once particpated in the creation of an NGO called &#8220;EssentialInnovation.Org.&#8221;  Essentialinovation.Org was an industry funded effort designed to counter public health NGO messaging on IP and health, and which used a domain name deliberately similiar to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/essentialinventions.org\/\">EssentialInventions.Org<\/a>,&#8221; a domain that I own, and that is used by an NGO that Rob Weissman and I am affiliated with that files for compulsory licenses on drug patents, and which supports various IPR and innovation reform policies backed by public health groups.<\/p>\n<p><em> (The corporate front group EssentialInnovation.Org is now defunct.  For background, see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.prlog.org\/10035532-international-thought-leaders-work-to-protect-innovation-to-address-global-public-health-needs.html\">this 2007 press release<\/a>).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Michael Schlesinger is one of the main lobbyists for the entertainment and publishing industries on IP enforcement.  <\/p>\n<p>These were their presentations:<\/p>\n<p>Michael P.
