{"id":40,"date":"2008-12-14T08:13:13","date_gmt":"2008-12-14T15:13:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jamie.workingagenda.com\/blog\/?p=40"},"modified":"2018-10-22T12:30:49","modified_gmt":"2018-10-22T16:30:49","slug":"ubuntu-810-m1530-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/jamie.workingagenda.com\/blog\/2008\/12\/14\/ubuntu-810-m1530-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Ubuntu 8.10 install on Dell XPS 1530"},"content":{"rendered":"<abbr class=\"unapi-id\" title=\"\"><!-- &nbsp; --><\/abbr>\n<p>In August 2008, I bought a Dell XPS m1530.<\/p>\n<p>I recently had a hard disk failure.\u00a0 I am still not sure if the cause is physical or a shutdown\/freeze related event.\u00a0 I decided to do a fresh install with Ubuntu 8.10.\u00a0 It went well at first, except for the touchpad, which went nuts, a problem I did not experience when installing 8.10 on a Dell Inspiron 1420n.<\/p>\n<p>I was advised to add this to the grub boot line:\u00a0\u00a0 i8042.nomux=1<\/p>\n<p>To edit the boot script, I used this command:<\/p>\n<p>sudo gedit \/boot\/grub\/menu.1st<\/p>\n<p>It worked fine, but it seems surprising that someone would have to know this to make the featured Dell Linux laptop work right after the 1st Ubuntu upgrade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Backups and data migration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips on moving data from one computer to another.\u00a0\u00a0 First, if you can, save your email from evolution using the <strong>backup settings<\/strong> option off the <strong>file<\/strong> menu.<\/p>\n<p>Second, in Firebox, back up and migrate your bookmarks by using the export\/import options in Firefox&#8217;s Bookmarks\/ Organisation Bookmarks menu.<\/p>\n<p>I use grsync to back up <strong>and restore <\/strong>the rest of the data files, using the option of preserving the file dates.  You can also do this from a unix copy command using the -p option.  (You will find it useful to keep the original file dates.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Software you will want to install<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.medibuntu.org\">http:\/\/www.medibuntu.org<\/a> and follow the directions on repositories.<\/p>\n<p>I would add all of the recommended repositories and multimedia codecs.\u00a0 I recommend using both free and non-free components.<\/p>\n<p>After this is done, here are some programs I like:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nadobe acrobat reader: arcroreader<br \/>\narchive utility: 7z<br \/>\narchive utility: rar<br \/>\narchive utility: unrar<br \/>\nart: art manager<br \/>\nart: gimp data extras<br \/>\nart: open clip art<br \/>\nbackup: grsync<br \/>\ncreate-resources<br \/>\neditor: bluefish<br \/>\neditor: Gooby<br \/>\ninternet: gftp<br \/>\ninternet: skype<br \/>\nlinux-restricted-modules<br \/>\nmultimedia: vlc<br \/>\nstatistics program: r-base<br \/>\ntext to speech: acroread-plugin-speech<br \/>\ntext to speech: espeak<br \/>\ntext to speech: festival<br \/>\nubuntu restricted extras<br \/>\nutility: gpass Password manager<br \/>\nutility: gprename<br \/>\nutility: kchmreader\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you want to collaborate with anyone who doesn&#8217;t use Linux, you will need to\u00a0 add the Microsoft True Type core fonts:<\/p>\n<p>sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sound and Video<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Next, I&#8217;ll try to get the video cam and the microphone working.<\/p>\n<p>So far, this seems to be a challenge.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In August 2008, I bought a Dell XPS m1530.
